Elastic bands-also known as elastic cords or rubber cords-are garment accessories made from elastic materials. The term first appeared in 1812 at a hat factory, referring to an "elastic round hat" constructed using springs and steel wire. The true elastic band was accidentally invented in 1820 by chemist Charles Macintosh and inventor Thomas Hancock during an experiment involving rubber concentration.

The evolution of elastic bands includes several key milestones: in 1876, they began to be used in women's lingerie, replacing traditional metal spring components; in 1960, elastic bands became a signature feature of the Chelsea boots popularized by The Beatles. Based on manufacturing methods, they are categorized into three types: woven, knitted, and braided. They are typically composed of materials such as rubber, polyester, adhesives, and elastic fibers; synthetic rubbers used include *cis*-1,4-polyisoprene (isoprene rubber) and *cis*-1,4-polybutadiene (butadiene rubber). These products are widely used in apparel-such as cuffs, lingerie, trousers, baby clothes, sportswear, and wedding gowns-as well as in medical bandages, bras, face masks, hang-tag cords, household goods, crafts, toys, stationery, and DIY projects.
